New Classes, New Ideas

Once again, I will be teaching several interior design courses for the community education departments in the Baldwin and Central St. Croix school districts.

I will be teaching Window Treatments 101, to help students learn the basics of what is available today in the world of window fashions.  I will also be offering Room Rescue, which is a round-table discussion of a particular problem room for each student; attendees are requested to bring floor plans, room photos and other information and I will offer tips to help them get started on their projects.

During the winter sessions, I will be offering a class in the craft of Paper Quilling, as well as Design Trends 2011 to show you the hot new colors and trends in the world of interior design.

What classes would you like for me to offer in the future?  Are you interested in learning how to coordinate fabrics in a room?  How to decorate with paint?  What are your ideas?  I’m happy to craft new classes to give you just the information you are looking for, so please leave any ideas or thoughts in a comment here!  And, look for class dates (and, maybe, class additions!) later this fall.

What other courses would you like me to offer in the future?

It’s Finished!

After many months of writing, and trying to find the time to upload photos and information, my new-and-improved website is up and running!  What a process, but the new site is such an improvement over the old one – it was totally worth all the time it took to produce.  I hope you agree!

I have included tons of new content, and more information about how I offer my services.  You may be surprised to find out that, unlike many designers, I don’t require my clients to purchase products from me.  Nice to have options, isn’t it?

Check it out, and please leave a comment here with your thoughts.  If you find any problems with the site – broken links, etc – please let me know that as well.  I’m sure there will be more tweaks to make along the way.

While you are at my site, take a moment to sign up for my monthly E-Newsletter, Design Line.  It is full of design tips and tricks, and you will not be hit with tons of spam emails for subscribing; the newsletter is all you will receive.  The August issue was just sent out, so subscribe today for your copy!

Small Bedroom? No Problem.

I was just glancing through the latest West Elm catalog, when I spotted this very cool storage bed frame!  For anyone who has a small bedroom space, an option like this could save the day.

I would especially find it useful for a guest room, or other space where extra linens need a home.  Those extra pillows and quilts can sure eat up closet space in a hurry!

My bedrooms are small, making a dresser a luxury in each of them.  Having a bed such as this for storing off-season clothing would really be handy.

I can’t imagine one would want to store things inside the bed that need to be accessed daily; a bed frame with drawers would be a handier alternative.  And, I would imagine that any under-the-bed storage has been lost with this option.  Although – I’d rather have my off-season clothing or bedding INSIDE the bed, rather than under it.  I’m sure it stays dust-bunny free that way!

What do you think?  Have you recently found a great storage idea for your home?  Share it – I’m always on the lookout for ways to save and create space!

Contemporary Tile Design

I had the pleasure of working with a couple building a fantastic contemporary home in Hudson.  The home was designed by a local architect in Hudson, and I was hired to assist the homeowners with their interior selections.

I enjoy custom tile design, and had a blast working on this home!  We used the same porcelain tile in both bathrooms, but arranged it differently to define each space.

The main tile is a green-gray concrete look; the accent tile is actually a striped tile incorporating deeper greens, taupe and caramel tones!  We also used some irridescent green glass tiles as an accent in both spaces for a little sparkle.

So far, I have only been able to photograph the bathrooms; I hope to get shots of their fantastic kitchen at some point, as well, which includes recycled glass countertops from Vetrazzo and a gorgeous wall of glass mosiac tile!  The cabinetry throughout the home is bamboo, which adds such warmth to the spaces.

I would love to hear what you think of the tile design; it is a very subtle pattern, but adds just enough custom flair.  Leave your comments here!

We Do Feet – New Phone Number

I have posted in the past regarding the help offered by We Do Feet, an organization in Hudson which serves the entire St. Croix Valley area in Wisconsin and Minnesota.  If you have furniture or appliances you wish to donate to this worthy organization, they have a new phone number:  715-781-0622.

You will find more information on the group and what items they accept for donation.  They are able to pick up larger items, or you can arrange a time to drop them by the warehouse yourself.  Aside from furniture and appliances, cash donations and donations of gently used or new mattress pads and sheet sets/bedding are also greatly needed.  These smaller items can be dropped by Trinity Lutheran Church (either campus) in Hudson during their regular office or service hours.

Thanks to all of you who have donated furniture in the past; I know several of my clients have given items they no longer needed after our redecorating projects!  Please pass this information on to friends and family you know who may have items they wish to donate.   All the donations are so appreciated – especially by those in our area who receive the assistance.

It Doesn’t Take Much…

I firmly believe that window treatments add the finishing touch to any room.  Even for homeowners who prefer things simple, with clean lines, a top treatment or drapery panel finishes any space beautifully.

In fact, I once counted myself as one who preferred windows to be open.  I don’t like elaborate, over-the-top window treatments.  Instead, a simple blind or shade to take care of the light and privacy issues was good enough for me.

However, the longer I have worked in this business, the more I have come to believe in the power of the window treatment.  Below are a few photos of a project we just installed.  My client wanted to keep her window trim exposed, and she needed light control and privacy, as this is her master bedroom.

We opted for a custom made Roman shade, which adds softness, color and pattern to the space, as well as taking care of the privacy issues.  It doesn’t take much to add punch to a room with a window treatment. What do you think?

We had it made of a striped faux silk fabric with a gorgeous drape.  The stripe picks up all the colors in the room, tying things together beautifully.  When the shade is raised, it creates its own valance!  Simple, elegant – enough.
